Bazm is an annual Ghazal event organized by Dr. Ameeta Parsuram at New Delhi. She says, it is her small gesture to preserve and promote the genre of Ghazal and to connect today’s youth to the beauty of Ghazal and Ghazal Gayaki. Bazm is being organized annually without interruption since 2009. It has the privilege of being a platform for artists like Padma Shri Shanti Hiranand, Padma Shri Hariharan, Talat Aziz, Chandan Dass, Radhika Chopra, Tina Sani (Karachi), Rekha Bhardwaj, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan (Lahore), Preet Dhillon (USA) and Sudeep Banerjee, to name a few. Bazm is a non-ticketed event, which is open for anyone who would like to attend a Ghazal concert. This endeavor by Meeta has, in its journey, received a lot of support from eminent people from the world of Music and Urdu Poetry; among these are Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Ustad Shujat Khan, Hariharan, Shanti Hiranand ji, Waseem Barehlavi, Talat Aziz, Anup Jalota, Madhurani ji, Penaz Masani and the list goes on.
Bazm was supported by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in the year 2012, when the artist for the event was invited from Karachi, Pakistan.
Bazm is organized in New Delhi and has received tremendous appreciation and support from the audience who eagerly waits for this Ghazal evening. It completed its journey of ten years, this year. Therefor January 4, 2019, celebrated ten years of Bazm Ka Safar, by making a tribute to Janaab Kaifi Azmi, on his Birth Centenary. Shabana Azmi Sahiba stated her yearlong celebrations of her father’s birth centenary with Bazm.
As a tribute to Kaifi Saab, this year the chapter of ‘Bazm-E-Sukhan’, Mushaira too was added. Shabana Azmi was interviewed by Dr. Ameeta about her life and experiences with Kaifi Saa. The evening concluded with Jaswinder Singh singing Ghazals of Kaifi Sahab and then many different poets.
The year 2014 added a new dimension to Bazm. In addition to organizing a Ghazal evening with an established artist, Bazm took on the task of encouraging young Ghazal singers by providing the Bazm platform for them in order to showcase their talent. First Bazm-Gen-Next (2014) introduced Jazim Sharma to the world of Live Ghazal mehfils. Dr. Ameeta groomed Jazim Sharma for two years, working on the language, tallafuz (pronunciation), understanding Ghazal etc. She also introduced him to the music organizers in Delhi and around. In addition, she gave to Jazim Sharma his debut Ghazal Album, Pyaar Bepanah, which was conceptualized, written and produced by Dr. Ameeta.
In line with this effort, on September 8, 2019, Dr. Ameeta is introducing yet another young artist to the world of Ghazal mehfils, Oshin Bhatia, who is presently registered for the Ph. D course (Music) from the Music faculty of Delhi University. I have been working with her for a year and will hand-hold her also for another year, teaching the intricacies of Ghazal gayaki and helping her to establish in the world of Ghazals.
Dr. Ameeta expressed her gratitude to all for their support and blessings through this journey.
