
JEDDAH – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, engaged in an exclusive interview with the Kingdom’s English daily, Arab News. The excerpts from this interview highlight the growing depth and breadth of India-Saudi relations.
Prime Minister Modi praised the limitless potential of the evolving relationship between India and Saudi Arabia. He is set to arrive in Jeddah on Tuesday for his third visit to the Kingdom since 2016, having previously visited Riyadh twice.
In his interview, Modi described Saudi Arabia as a “trusted friend and strategic ally,” emphasizing the significant expansion in bilateral relations since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019. “Our relationship has the potential to grow infinitely. In a world filled with uncertainties, our bond stands strong like a pillar,” he remarked.
Modi lauded Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman for his visionary leadership, calling him a staunch supporter of bilateral ties. He acknowledged the global recognition of the Crown Prince’s reforms under Vision 2030, which have brought transformative changes to Saudi Arabia.
Highlighting shared economic aspirations, Modi noted the growth in trade between the two nations in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and fertilizers, despite global challenges. He welcomed the collaboration between Saudi and Indian businesses, particularly in green hydrogen and technology.
Indian companies continue to maintain a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia. Modi also referenced the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC) during the G20 Summit in September 2023, describing it as a pivotal initiative for trade, connectivity, and development across the region.
The Indian government issued a statement underscoring the significance of Modi’s visit, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia.
When asked about the impact of the Strategic Partnership Council on India-Saudi relations, Modi expressed gratitude to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the invitation and highlighted the historical and cultural roots of the relationship. “Our partnership is not new; it is deeply rooted in centuries-old civilization, with continuous exchanges in ideas and trade,” he said.
Modi emphasized the mutual trust and goodwill that underpin the relationship, describing it as a “pillar of strength” in an uncertain world. He expressed optimism about the future of India-Saudi relations, acknowledging the pivotal role of Saudi leadership in fostering this partnership.
The Prime Minister affirmed that India and Saudi Arabia will continue to work together for peace, development, and prosperity—not just for their people but for the entire world.
Reflecting on his personal rapport with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Modi shared his admiration for the Crown Prince’s visionary approach and dedication to fulfilling the aspirations of his people. “His leadership has brought remarkable social and economic transformation to Saudi Arabia, garnering global attention,” Modi noted.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of defense ties and joint exercises between the two nations, recognizing Saudi Arabia as a stabilizing force in the region. He emphasized the shared interest in preserving peace and stability in the region, given their proximity as maritime neighbors.
Modi also acknowledged the growing cooperation in counter-terrorism, combating extremism, and addressing challenges such as terrorism financing and drug trafficking. He stressed the importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected world and the ongoing efforts in this domain.
