RIYADH – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal and proactive diplomatic role in de-escalating heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan, following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, 2025. The Kingdom’s swift and proactive diplomatic intervention saw it become the first nation to dispatch a special envoy to both New Delhi and Islamabad, culminating in a crucial ceasefire agreement on May 10.
In the wake of the attack, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan initiated early dialogue with both nations, urging restraint and de-escalation. This was followed by direct high-level engagement, with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir undertaking visits to both the Indian and Pakistani capitals to facilitate discussions.
Leveraging its balanced and trusted relationships with both India and Pakistan, Saudi Arabia was uniquely positioned to act as a mediator. The Kingdom’s effective diplomacy in navigating the complex situation has drawn praise from Pakistani leadership.
International observers have noted Riyadh’s assertive diplomatic posture as a significant indicator of its expanding global influence and its unwavering commitment to fostering regional stability. The successful mediation efforts underscore Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a key peacemaker on the international stage.
