Riyadh – In a heartfelt display of unity and grief, the Telugu Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community in Riyadh gathered on Saturday evening to hold a solemn candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the tragic Air India flight AI-171 crash. The devastating accident, which occurred on June 12, claimed the lives of over 270 individuals when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner plummeted into a medical hostel near Ahmedabad airport.
Organized by the Saudi Arabia Telugu Association (SATA), the vigil drew members from across the city, many holding candles and offering silent prayers for the departed souls. SATA President G. Ananda Raju spoke on the occasion, emphasizing the importance of compassion and collective mourning in times of such national loss. “This is more than a tribute; it is a reminder that no matter how far we are from home, our hearts grieve alongside our fellow citizens,” he stated.

The women’s wing of the organization, represented by Ms. Akshita and Ms. Shilpa, voiced their deep sorrow at the scale of the tragedy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this devastating accident. May they find strength in this dark hour,” they expressed.
The evening concluded with a moment of silence and the lighting of 270 candles—one for each precious life lost. Among the many heart-wrenching stories to emerge from the wreckage was that of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian national and the sole known survivor of the crash, who was found in seat 11A.
The Telugu community in Riyadh reiterated their resolve to stand in solidarity with the nation and pledged continued support for humanitarian efforts. The event not only mourned the loss of life but also served as a powerful reminder of shared humanity beyond borders.
