Republic Day in India is celebrated on January 26th every year to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, which marked the country’s transition to a democratic republic. The day is significant as it represents the spirit of independent India and the establishment of the Indian Constitution, which replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of the country. The constitution itself was drafted by the Constituent Assembly, headed by Dr. BR Ambedkar, and involved rigorous debates and deliberations before its adoption. Notably, the preamble to the Constitution of India, which outlines the key principles of the document, came into effect on January 26th, 1950, consolidating the transition to a sovereign republic.

The choice of January 26th as Republic Day aligns with the historic “Poorna Swaraj” declaration in 1930, when the Indian National Congress claimed complete independence from British rule. This date signifies a pivotal moment in India’s freedom struggle, underlining the country’s journey towards self-rule and sovereignty. The day also holds significance due to the Purna Swaraj (complete self-rule) declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress in 1930, considered the first concrete step toward independence from Britain.

Republic Day celebrations feature a grand parade in the capital city of New Delhi, with vibrant displays of cultural heritage and military prowess. This includes elaborate marches by armed forces personnel and tableaux showcasing the diversity and culture of different states. The day also serves as a solemn reminder of India’s struggle for self-rule and the establishment of its democratic government.

This year, India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day, and the theme for the celebrations is “India – Mother of Democracy” and “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). Notably, the 2024 Republic Day parade will feature two all-women contingents from the defense forces marching, showcasing another step towards gender inclusivity and empowerment.

In addition, the Republic Day parade typically invites a special chief guest, with notable past guests including the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, highlighting the event’s international significance.
